After 28 days traveling through this beautiful and diverse South American country, it was time to say goodbye. To wrap up this travel journal, I’d like to share with you some random photos I took in the capital, Quito. Some of these images may seem unrelated, but they capture the things that caught my eye for a moment during my walks around the city. I hope you enjoy them!
Tras 28 días viajando por este hermoso y diverso país suramericano, llegó el momento de decir adiós, y para finalizar este diario de viaje comparto con ustedes fotos aleatorias que hice en la capital, Quito. Algunas imágenes quizás sin conexión, pero que representan lo que me llamó la atención por unos instantes durante mis paseos por la ciudad. ¡Espero las disfruten!
The area where I walked the most, and of course, took the most photos, was the historic district. It’s quite large and very well-preserved, with charming streets, buildings, and details that make it impossible to put your camera away.
La zona por donde más caminé, y por supuesto fotografié más, fue el casco histórico. Bastante grande y muy bien conservado, con calles, edificaciones y detalles atractivos que no te dejan guardar la cámara en ningún momento.
In my opinion, Quito is a city that has managed to preserve its historic charm to attract tourists, while also embracing modernity for the benefit of both locals and visitors. It offers good public transportation, excellent customer service, and a diverse culinary scene, among other things.
En mi opinión, Quito es una ciudad que ha sabido conservar lo viejo para sacarle provecho turísticamente, pero incorporando la modernidad para beneficio de locales y visitantes. Buen transporte público, atención al público, variedad gastronómica, entre otras cosas.
Although I always do my research before going on a trip, especially when traveling abroad, there are some things you just don’t read about, and sometimes those are the best parts of a trip: the surprises. For example, seeing everyday life in the city, buildings you didn’t see mentioned in your travel guide, or getting a sense of what the people are like.
Aunque siempre me documento antes de emprender un viaje, y más cuando es al extranjero, hay cosas sobre las que no lees, y a veces suelen ser la mejor parte de un viaje: las sorpresas. Por ejemplo, ver cosas cotidianas que ocurren en la ciudad, edificaciones que no viste reseñadas en tu guía de viaje o cómo es la gente.
It also happens that there are places you hadn’t planned to visit, but when you see them in person, you decide to go inside. That’s what happened to me with the Church of the Society of Jesus. I’m not a religious person, but I love architecture and history; so when I found out that this church was one of the most important Baroque buildings on the continent, I didn’t want to miss it.
También pasa que hay lugares que no pensabas visitar, pero al verlos en vivo y directo decides entrar. Esto me pasó con la Iglesia de La Compañía de Jesús. No soy una persona religiosa, pero me gusta la arquitectura, la historia; así que al enterarme de que este templo era una de las edificaciones barrocas más importantes del continente, no me lo quise perder.
Its construction spanned many years, from 1605 to 1765. It was the Jesuit priests who worked to shape its structure.
Su construcción duró muchos años, de 1605 a 1765. Fueron los sacerdotes jesuitas quienes trabajaron en darle forma a su estructura.
The most impressive thing about this church is the interior, pure sparkle! They used a technique called “gold leaf,” which involves covering carved wood or other materials with thin sheets of gold to make them look even more stunning. I don't think Jesus would approve of all this opulence...
Lo más impresionante de esta iglesia es el interior, ¡puro brillo! Allí se utilizó una técnica llamada “pan de oro”, que consiste en cubrir con finas láminas de oro todo lo tallado en madera u otro material para hacerlo ver más deslumbrante. Creo que Jesús no estaría de acuerdo con toda esta opulencia...
Back on the streets, Quito isn’t just at a considerable altitude: 2,850 meters above sea level, it’s also not a flat city. In the historic center and its surroundings, there are many steep streets, which force you to stop for a few seconds to rest, catch your breath, and, of course, take pictures.
Volviendo a la calle, Quito no sólo está a una altura considerable: 2.850 metros sobre el nivel del mar, tampoco es una ciudad plana. En el centro histórico y sus alrededores hay muchas calles empinadas, lo que te obliga a detenerte unos segundos para descansar, tomar aire, y claro, fotografiar.
Among the places I find most interesting to shot are the squares. And there are many in this city, such as Santo Domingo. There stands a statue of Antonio José de Sucre, the Grand Marshal of Ayacucho, a Venezuelan national hero who played a leading role in Ecuador’s independence movement.
Entre los lugares que me parecen más interesantes para hacer click, están las plazas. Y hay muchas en esta ciudad, como la de Santo Domingo. Allí se encuentra una estatua de Antonio José de Sucre, el Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho, prócer venezolano protagonista del proceso independentista de Ecuador.
Some of them come into view after walking through narrow streets, spreading out beneath Quito’s mountainous landscape. Take a look at Plaza San Francisco, it’s always bustling with activity.
Algunas de ellas aparecen después de caminar por angostas calles, desplegándose bajo la geografía montañosa de Quito. Miren la Plaza San Francisco, mucho movimiento a toda hora.
Although I spent most of my time walking around the old town, I also walked through the modern parts, taking in the striking contrasts this city has to offer.
Aunque estuve paseando más por la parte vieja, también caminé por zonas modernas, viendo los grandes contrastes que ofrece esta ciudad.
