El animal que muestro en imágenes y un video, lo encontré en el Parque Municipal “Casupo” (Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela) en un área boscosa sin sendero. Al verlo me pareció deforme y bien raro, en especial por como movía su abdomen hacia todos lados. El encuentro fue breve y cuando pensé en tocarlo se fue volando. Allí mismo revisé el video y no vi las alas de vuelo. En general, solo sabía que era un insecto por las 6 patas pero ni idea de que animal era.

I found the animal shown in the images and video at “Casupo” Municipal Park (Valencia, Carabobo, Venezuela) in a wooded area with no trails. When I saw it, it looked deformed and very strange to me, especially because of the way it was moving its abdomen in all directions. The encounter was brief, and when I thought about touching it, it flew away. Right there, I reviewed the video and didn’t see any flight wings. Basically, I only knew it was an insect because of its six legs, but I had no idea what kind of animal it was.

Lo identifiqué subiendo imágenes en la red social y base de datos iNaturalist. Es de la familia Staphylinidae, subfamilia Staphylininae, tribu Staphylinini, subtribu Staphylinina, género Leistotrophus (género que, a la fecha, posee 15 especies según iNaturalist). El animal se corresponde con la especie Leistotrophus versicolor, y curiosamente, aunque no parezca por la percepción de ideas que uno pueda tener, es un escarabajo.

I identified it by uploading images to the social media platform and database iNaturalist. It belongs to the family Staphylinidae, subfamily Staphylininae, tribe Staphylinini, subtribe Staphylinina, and genus Leistotrophus (a genus that, to date, comprises 15 species according to iNaturalist). The animal corresponds to the species Leistotrophus versicolor, and curiously, although it may not seem so from the perception of ideas that one may have, it is a beetle.

I looked into the scientific literature and found some information that I consider quite curious and interesting, which I comment on below.

La mayoría de los escarabajos poseen élitros largos (alas endurecidas exteriores) que además de proteger a las alas membranosas interiores que utilizan para volar, cubren totalmente el abdomen. Pero el escarabajo que presento, al igual que la mayoría de los miembros de la familia Staphylinidae, posee élitros notablemente cortos que dejan expuesta la mayor parte de su abdomen que es flexible, a diferencia de la mayoría de los escarabajos, que tiene un abdomen relativamente rígido. Es decir, se distingue de otros escarabajos por sus élitros cortos, que dejan al descubierto más de la mitad de su abdomen, bastante flexible. El abdomen expuesto lo puede mover libremente, y esto le permite tener un cuerpo muy maniobrable que puede moverse rápidamente a través de espacios estrechos y curvos, y puede ampliar su gama de microhábitats, especialmente en la hojarasca. Most beetles have long elytra (hardened outer wings) that not only protect the membranous inner wings they use for flight but also completely cover the abdomen. But the beetle I am presenting, like most members of the Staphylinidae family, has notably short elytra that leave most of its abdomen exposed; this abdomen is flexible, unlike that of most beetles, which have a relatively rigid abdomen. In other words, it differs from other beetles due to its short elytra, which leave more than half of its quite flexible abdomen exposed. It can move its exposed abdomen freely, and this allows it to have a highly maneuverable body that can move quickly through narrow and curved spaces, expanding its range of microhabitats, especially in leaf litter. En las imágenes uno se podría preguntar: ¿dónde están las alas membranosas interiores que utiliza para volar?, pues, debido a que sus élitros son extremadamente cortos, este escarabajo, a diferencia de la mayoría de los escarabajos que guardan sus alas interiores de forma relativamente pasiva bajo los élitros, debe plegar sus alas interiores, que son mucho más largas, de una manera altamente eficiente y rápida para protegerlas. El plegado de alas en Leistotrophus versicolor es considerado uno de los mecanismos de almacenamiento biológico más complejos de la naturaleza. La característica más notable de su estrategia de supervivencia es que nunca ha perdido sus alas de vuelo, a pesar de la reducción del espacio de almacenamiento dorsal (élitros). Looking at the images, one might wonder: where are the membranous inner wings it uses to fly? Well, because its elytra are extremely short, this beetle, unlike most beetles, which keep their inner wings in a relatively passive form under their elytra, must fold its inner wings, which are much longer, in a highly efficient and rapid manner to protect them. Wing folding in Leistotrophus versicolor is considered one of the most complex biological storage mechanisms in nature. The most notable feature of its survival strategy is that it has never lost its flight wings, despite the reduction in dorsal storage space (elytra). This strategy is achieved thanks to its extraordinary asymmetric folding of the right and left wings. Each flight wing has two different folding patterns, allowing them to fold in two distinct directions (right or left), enabling the beetle to choose which direction to store them in as needed. The wings fold into a “Z” shape and are stored compactly under the beetle’s reduced elytra.

El movimiento de plegamiento de las alas de este escarabajo consiste en 2 tipos de movimientos abdominales (balanceo y elevación). El proceso es activo y depende de movimientos precisos del abdomen flexible. The wing-folding movement of this beetle involves two types of abdominal movements (swinging and lifting). The process is active and relies on precise movements of the flexible abdomen. For example, a beetle of the Staphylinidae family performs a series of abdominal “pushes” (usually between 4 and 5) to tuck the inner membranous wings under the elytra. In the first thrust, it moves the wings sideways to initiate asymmetric folding. In the second thrust, it pulls the wings from behind to begin tucking them under the elytra. In the third thrust, it swings the abdomen laterally so that the tips of the wings are oriented toward the sides of the body. In the fourth and fifth thrusts, it secures the final folds, leaving the wings fully protected. It is worth noting that the wings contain areas with resilin, an elastic protein that acts like a spring, allowing the wings to unfold almost instantly when the elytra are raised for flight.

Por otro lado, los machos y las hembras del escarabajo Leistotrophus versicolor se agrupan en el estiércol y la carroña, ya que estas sustancias atraen a las moscas que los escarabajos capturan y consumen. Los machos compiten por el control de los territorios en el estiércol, monopolizando así un recurso que les da acceso al alimento y a las hembras con las que se aparean.

On the other hand, male and female Leistotrophus versicolor beetles congregate around dung and carrion, as these substances attract the flies that the beetles capture and consume. Males compete for control of territories in the dung, thereby monopolizing a resource that gives them access to food and to the females with which they mate.

Observaciones realizadas han revelado que los machos a veces atacan a sus parejas poco después de completar el apareamiento. En estos ataques, el macho muerde con fuerza a la hembra, a veces mientras la persigue hasta 50 centímetros. Para explicar el comportamiento sobre esa agresión poscopulatoria, en una investigación, mediante experimentos, se probaron 4 hipótesis: la hipótesis de la competencia espermática; la hipótesis de la señal de transferencia de esperma, que sostiene que los machos muerden a sus parejas tras el apareamiento para indicar que han transferido con éxito el esperma; la hipótesis de la competencia por el alimento, que sostiene que la agresividad de los machos hacia sus parejas se produce para ahuyentar a los competidores por las presas de moscas; y la hipótesis de la agresividad redirigida, que sostiene que los ataques de los machos tras el apareamiento se producen cuando los machos amenazados redirigen su agresividad hacia sus parejas. Observations made have revealed that males sometimes attack their mates shortly after mating is complete. During these attacks, the male bites the female hard, sometimes while chasing her for up to 50 centimeters. To explain this post-copulatory aggression, a study tested four hypotheses through experiments: the sperm competition hypothesis; the sperm transfer signal hypothesis, which posits that males bite their mates after mating to indicate that they have successfully transferred sperm; the food competition hypothesis, which posits that males’ aggression toward their mates occurs to scare off competitors for fly prey; and the redirected aggression hypothesis, which posits that males’ post-mating attacks occur when threatened males redirect their aggression toward their mates. Apparently, the sperm competition hypothesis explains these attacks. This hypothesis posits that females are typically receptive while in the dung and mate with more than one male; as such, males may attack their mates to drive them away from the dung, where other males seeking mates are likely to find them. If females mate with more than one male during a visit to the dung, the first male to copulate with her presumably would see his chances of fertilizing the eggs reduced due to sperm competition. It is worth noting that the sperm competition hypothesis proposes that the behavior of attacking a mate is functionally equivalent to protecting the mate.

El escarabajo Leistotrophus versicolor, que se puede encontrar en los bosques tropicales, también tiene su lado tenebroso, en el sentido de ejecutar acciones ocultas y con intenciones perversas. The Leistotrophus versicolor beetle, that can be found in tropical forests, also has a sinister side, in the sense that it carries out hidden actions with perverse intentions. It is a specialized and obligate predator of adult dipterans (order Diptera), displaying unusual flexibility and complexity when capturing its prey. Individuals can be found on vertebrate excrement or carrion, where they wait to ambush flies (Diptera) that approach, attracted by these materials. However, in places where there is no decaying matter, the beetles wait on leaves or rocks, where they can use secretions to attract very small flies to themselves. Evidence of this chemical attractant comes from observations of small flies that come very close to and sometimes touch the motionless beetles.

Estos escarabajos tienen varios patrones de comportamiento especializados que implican la liberación de productos secretores o excretores muy aromáticos desde estructuras situadas en la punta del abdomen. These beetles exhibit several specialized behavioral patterns involving the release of highly aromatic secretions or excretions from structures located at the tip of the abdomen. These substances may be deposited onto the substrate, with the beetle placing its head on the applied substances, or the beetle may wave the tip of its abdomen, equipped with odor-releasing structures, toward small flies that approach it. The ability to employ alternative tactics allows individuals to feed successfully even in areas that lack decaying matter to attract flies.

Para tender una emboscada a sus presas, el escarabajo primero detecta y sigue las señales olfativas asociadas a la materia orgánica en descomposición. Una vez que encuentra este material, el insecto se posiciona allí como un depredador que espera al acecho, atacando a las presas que se acercan, atraídas por el estiércol, la carroña o frutas en descomposición. En ausencia de materia orgánica en descomposición, el escarabajo se posa en hojas o rocas, desde donde libera atrayentes químicos que atraen a un grupo diferente de moscas.

To ambush its prey, the beetle first detects and follows the scent trails associated with decaying organic matter. Once it finds this material, the beetle positions itself there like a predator lying in wait, attacking prey that approaches, drawn by dung, carrion, or rotting fruit. In the absence of decaying organic matter, the beetle perches on leaves or rocks, from where it releases chemical attractants that lure a different group of flies.

In general, Leistotrophus versicolor employs two different foraging strategies and possesses the behavioral flexibility necessary to adopt either of these two foraging modes.

En un experimento realizado, en relación con la primera táctica de búsqueda de alimento, en tan solo 1 hora tras colocar un pequeño cebo de excrementos humanos en el suelo de un bosque, llegaron hasta 19 escarabajos que se posaron sobre el cebo o a pocos centímetros de él. Las presas que se acercaban a veces aterrizaban muy cerca de los escarabajos al acecho, que se abalanzaban sobre las moscas y las capturaban con sus mandíbulas. En otras ocasiones, sin embargo, los escarabajos acechaban a las moscas que se alimentaban a distancias cortas (unos 5 centímetros) mientras sus presas se movían por los excrementos o cerca de ellos, y mientras acechaban se movían lentamente y de forma sigilosa, con el abdomen paralelo al suelo en lugar de girado hacia arriba en la punta; como es habitual en la especie. In an experiment conducted to test the first foraging tactic, within just one hour of placing a small bait of human feces on the forest floor, up to 19 beetles arrived and landed on the bait or within a few centimeters of it. Prey that approached sometimes landed very close to the lurking beetles, which pounced on the flies and captured them with their mandibles. On other occasions, however, the beetles stalked flies feeding at close range (about 5 centimeters) while their prey moved through or near the feces, and while stalking they moved slowly and stealthily, with their abdomen parallel to the floor rather than turned upward at the tip; as is typical for the species. Prey were eliminated with short, rapid attacks after the stalking beetle approached within 1 centimeter of the prey.

Mediante observaciones, con relación a la segunda táctica de búsqueda de alimento, se ha visto que los escarabajos se posaban en lugares que carecían de cualquier recurso alimenticio obvio para los dípteros. Through observation, regarding the second foraging tactic, it was seen that the beetles landed in places that lacked any obvious food sources for dipterans. The three “resource-poor” substrates they used as ambush sites included: leaves on young trees and shrubs, typically between 0.5 and 2.0 meters above the floor; dry, dead leaves fallen to the floor in open areas, such as trails or clearings next to a stream; and bare rocks located on the bank of a stream or even surrounded by the stream’s flowing water.

Los escarabajos que elegían hojas vivas solían posarse inmóviles a menos de 2 centímetros del pecíolo, mirando en dirección a la punta de la hoja. The beetles that chose live leaves tended to perch motionless less than 2 centimeters from the petiole, facing the tip of the leaf. The longitudinal axis of their bodies formed an angle of between 0 and 15° with the leaf’s midrib. The antennae of the waiting beetle extended forward, parallel to each other, while the tip of the abdomen curved upward. If a fly landed on the leaf and approached within a few centimeters of the beetle, the predator would sometimes slowly adjust its body position to face the prey. When the fly came within 1 centimeter, the beetle would launch forward explosively to seize the prey with its front legs and mouthparts. Beetles waiting on dry leaves did not choose the area near the petiole, but tended to wait in the center of the leaf. Otherwise, the behavior of individuals on leaves fallen to the floor and on stream rocks was similar to that of beetles on the leaves of young trees and shrubs.

The behavior of beetles perched on leaves and rocks in the presence of flies was consistent with the chemical attractant or lure hypothesis. The approach of a fly typically caused the beetle to begin wiggling the tip of its abdomen, which it then lowered slightly and turned toward the side where the fly was located. As the beetle wiggled its abdomen, it often slowly shifted its body to look directly at the fly, preparing for the attack.

Por otra parte, es de hacer notar que cuando los adultos del escarabajo Leistotrophus versicolor se agrupan en excrementos de vertebrados y carroña, donde machos y hembras se alimentan de dípteros adultos, algunos machos expulsan agresivamente a otros de los excrementos y la carroña. Los ganadores en los combates entre machos obtienen acceso a muchas hembras, que suelen estar receptivas en esos lugares de alimentación. It is also worth noting that when adult Leistotrophus versicolor beetles gather around vertebrate droppings and carrion, where both males and females feed on adult dipterans. some males aggressively drive others away from the droppings and carrion. The winners of these fights gain access to many females, who are often receptive at these feeding sites. Males vary greatly in size; they are on average larger than females and have enlarged mandibles that they use in combat. Large males systematically defeat smaller ones. However, some males employ female mimicry to avoid aggression, remaining in the droppings where they feed and even managing to mate while being courted by rival males. Mimicry of females is most commonly practiced by males that are smaller than their rivals or by those who cannot use their mandibles aggressively because they are feeding or courting females when they encounter an opponent. Female mimicry is a situational tactic employed by mature males; some individuals behave like females in the presence of larger males but attack smaller rivals. In general, although sexual dimorphism exists between males and females, since males have longer bodies and mandibles, it is possible that some smaller males practice female mimicry to reduce the aggressive behavior of larger males and as a strategy to gain access to females.

Finalmente, cabe comentar, que a escarabajos de Leistotrophus versicolor se les ha observado merodeando por los alrededores de un montón de estiércol, como si esperaran la llegada de escarabajos peloteros o coprófagos de la especie Canthidium cupreum, y seguidamente, cuando un escarabajo pelotero llegaba, por lo general era atacado y agarrado con las mandíbulas, le amputaban algunas patas y le desprendían el protórax y el mesotórax. Fueron varios los individuos capturados de Canthidium cupreum por los escarabajos de Leistotrophus versicolor, y se presume que la razón de ello podría ser la ausencia de sustancias desagradables al paladar, o que esa especie sea más fácil de capturar que otras, posiblemente debido al menor tamaño de Canthidium cupreum (5,0 milímetros) en comparación con el tamaño de un individuo de Leistotrophus versicolor (22,0 milímetros). Finally, it is worth noting that Leistotrophus versicolor beetles have been observed prowling around a dung pile, as if waiting for the arrival of dung beetles or coprophagous beetles of the species Canthidium cupreum; and then, when a dung beetle arrived, it was usually attacked and seized with the mandibles, had some of its legs amputated, and had its prothorax and mesothorax torn off. Several individuals of Canthidium cupreum were captured by Leistotrophus versicolor beetles, and it is presumed that the reason for this could be the absence of substances unpleasant to the palate, or that this species is easier to capture than others, possibly due to the smaller size of Canthidium cupreum (5.0 millimeters) compared to the size of a Leistotrophus versicolor individual (22.0 millimeters). For the species Leistotrophus versicolor, sizes ranging from 15 to 27 millimeters have also been reported.
