Jan Matejko was a painter of historical pictures dealing mainly with Polish history. He has become the most important Polish artist, although his heritage was constantly questioned by avant-garde artists and critics. These efforts were unsuccessful however. Apart from historical scenes, of which Battle of Grunwald is most important, he painted stunning portraits. He is very seldom shown abroad, hence he remains relatively unknown. This changes, however, as the National Gallery in London has shown recently his painting The Astronomer Copernicus. Conversations with God.
