Mingus’ refusal to compromise his musical integrity caused many onstage arguments, admonishments to musicians and dismissals. Although respected for his musical talent, he was feared for his sporadically violent temperament on stage, which was sometimes directed at members of his band and other times at the audience. However, he was prone to depression and switched between brief, highly creative periods and long stages of inactivity. In 1968, film director Thomas Reichman made the documentary Mingus: Charlie Mingus 1968, showing his eviction from his New York apartment for non-payment of rent, as well as clubs performances and his views on politics, art and his music.

Mingus’ music is being reinterpreted by the Mingus Big Band, a 14-member ensemble that in 2008 began playing weekly at the Jazz Standard club in New York and often tours the United States and Europe. In 2011 it received the Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album for Live at Jazz Standard (2010). Epitaph is considered one of Mingus’ masterpieces. The composition requires two hours of performance and is one of the longest jazz pieces ever written. It was discovered by musicologist Andrew Homzy after his death, premiered in 1989 by a 30-piece orchestra conducted by Gunther Schuller and presented again several times in 2007.

This theme has a very suggestive medium-slow time melody and all the solos are supported by the wind section. Knepper starts by following the blues harmonies with a dirty and vocal sound. Next Parlan comes in with a very bluesy and soulful solo. After that, Handy plays very interesting and naughty phrases on clarinet. Mingus follows with a simple, but much meaningful solo. Then Ervin enters with an easygoing and straightforward melodic line, and finally the group re-exposes the theme.
