If I liked the first one... I loved this one ✨ After that ending, I was anxious to find out what was going to happen. And this book gave me EVERYTHING: adventure, politics, passion, disappointment, betrayal... even migration 🤭 I feel like the first one was more political because we needed to understand the world. This one, on the other hand, was pure emotional intensity.

The evolution of the world
Something I noticed is that this second part focuses less on expanding the world and more on deepening the characters' experiences. 80% of the story takes place in the same castle, which can feel a little repetitive. However, the beginning of the book makes up for that feeling. Emily's migration from Mishnock to Lacrontte was one of the parts that impacted me the most. And Ewan Forest is not just a dangerous setting. We knew from the previous book that it was practically a natural graveyard, a place where those seeking to escape the abuse of power lose their lives trying to cross it. And seeing Emily cross it, it is impossible not to draw parallels with our own reality. People fleeing oppressive regimes, risking everything for a slim chance at freedom. Every day, thousands of people embark on a similar journey, attempting to cross dangerous and inhospitable territories for a better future. I really liked how Magnus and Gregorie handled leadership. They don't hide behind walls. They actively participate in battles, make strategic decisions, and expose themselves to the same risks as their soldiers. Wars are innocent people fighting other people's problems because of the ego, pride, and ambition of those in power. But these cousins fight their own battles, and although they are not perfect, they are not political cowards.

Esta segunda parte se concentra menos en expandir el mundo y más en profundizar en la experiencia de los personajes. El 80% de la historia ocurre en el mismo castillo, lo cual puede sentirse algo repetitivo. Sin embargo, el inicio del libro compensa esa sensación. También debo acotar que me gustó como manejan el liderazgo Magnus y Gregorie. Ellos no se esconden tras murallas. Participan activamente en las batallas, toman decisiones estratégicas y se exponen al mismo riesgo que sus soldados. Las guerras son gente inocente peleando los problemas de otros; por ego, soberbia y ambición de los gobernantes. Pero estos primos llevan a cabo sus propias luchas, y aunque no son perfectos, no son cobardes políticos.

Emily Malhore
She has just been kidnapped. And I'm not going to sugarcoat it. What Stefan did was kidnapping motivated by obsession. He isolated her, manipulated her, humiliated her, and tried to turn her into a trophy. And yet, what I liked most about her evolution is that she doesn't play the victim. She suffers, she cries, she doubts. But she doesn't reduce herself to that. I love how she demands respect. She has boundaries. She has character. And when she tells Magnus that “the coin you give me will be the same coin you get back,” it's a key moment. Something I think is important to point out: Emily cries. A lot. And that has drawn criticism. But I think it's unfair to judge her. Crying doesn't make her weak. It makes her human. And yet, she makes strategic decisions. This book shows a more hardened Emily, but not a bitter one. She is more aware of power games. There's a part where Magnus asks her, “If you've suffered so much, why do you want to fall in love again?” To which Emily replies, “Otherwise, I would be giving the person who hurt me power over me, and I won't allow that.” And I loved that resilience in her.

Magnus Lacrontte
I love how Magnus embodies the saying, “the tongue is the punishment of the body.” He's a deeply contradictory character. He hides behind sarcasm and coldness when in reality he is completely in love. Much of the book shows him fighting against himself. Making up excuses to get closer to Emily. Denying the obvious. However, Magnus earned himself a direct pass to second place among my literary crushes—the first is Will Herondale, synonymous with perfection, and it will be difficult to surpass him—because despite being erratic and wild, Magnus is authentic and transparent in his own way; what he shows is what he is. He has carried the guilt for his parents' death since he was twelve. They didn't allow him to grieve, heal his wounds, or understand the magnitude of what had happened. Worse, they made him believe that he was to blame. But your personal traumas don't justify hurting someone else, especially deliberately. The ending hurt me precisely because of that. Because he knows he loves Emily. We know it. His POVs make it clear (the chapters narrated by him are pure gold). But even so, he chooses to hurt her in the name of revenge that does not directly involve her.

I don't know what Stefan could do to earn my forgiveness. Although he also carries a heavy burden that he has been dragging around since childhood, the difference between him and Magnus is clear: Magnus makes mistakes and recognizes them internally; Stefan genuinely believes he is entitled. He thinks what he is doing is right. He never apologizes and blames Emily for everything. He is married. He is king regent. He has power. And yet he remains obsessed with Emily as if she were an object that belongs to him. He talks about a “future together” while he has already formalized another union. His logic and reasoning were lost in the Ewan Forest and no one ever found them again. I don't see any redemption possible here, at least not at this point in the saga. That's why I get a bad feeling about all the Reels I've seen that say, “Magnus is everything, but we can't forget that at one point he was...”, and they put up illustrations of Emily and Stefan. No. Forget it. He only served to teach Emily what she should not accept. What he “showed” was a sham, a superficiality; he never loved her. So let's not romanticize him.

No sé qué podría hacer Stefan para ganarse mi perdón. Romance and emotional dynamics
I understand Emily's insecurity regarding Magnus. In her previous relationship, Stefan promised her the world, filled her with hope. And then he discarded her. He basically told her she was nobody. That she was a commoner who wasn't good enough for a king. So now Magnus comes along, a king three times more important than Stefan, flirting with her... obviously she's going to have insecurities. I felt some dark romance vibes here😂 But even so, Magnus won my heart. I loved his narrations, I loved his attitude toward Emily, his behavior as a teenager in love, his evolution. His Machiavellian mind and personality made me laugh a lot. What I enjoyed most were Magnus's POVs. Seeing how he silently loses emotional control, how he contradicts himself, how he is consumed by feelings he doesn't know how to manage... it was delightful. My best friend says that Stefan's song is Taylor Swift's “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys,” and YES, IT IS. Stefan's behavior made this song play in my head; I hummed it when I couldn't quite process his attitudes. And I say that Magnus's song is “But Daddy I Love Him,” also by Taylor. It's totally him. It's “yes, this guy is crazy, but he's MY crazy, and you can't come to the wedding” Listen to them, they'll give you plenty of context.

Romance y dinámica emocional
Entiendo la inseguridad de Emily con respecto a Magnus. En su relación anterior, Stefan le prometió el mundo, la llenó de ilusiones. Y luego la desechó. Le dijo prácticamente que ella no era nadie. The final plot twists
I understand Magnus' need for revenge, but I think he had plenty of opportunities to warn Emily about his plans. Emily fell right into the trap. I read that whole part crying because it broke my heart to see how they broke her. How she begs not to be sent back to her hell, to the same chains that imprisoned her. How she screams in despair for having trusted. How she blames herself for giving her heart away again. When we read, our brain does not fully distinguish between fiction and reality; the neural connections that are activated are very similar to those generated when we experience real life events. And I felt a deeply genuine disappointment. It was as if I had fallen in love and, suddenly, been betrayed. Karine Bernal Lobos knew how to build the bond in such a way that the moment didn't feel forced or incoherent, but painfully possible. I didn't hate Magnus, but he completely disappointed me. All that talk about Stefan, all that pointing out his mistakes, his weakness... and he ends up falling into a similar dynamic. Isn't he supposed to be the strongest, the smartest, the strategist? And yet he allows the “would-be king” to destabilize him and play with his decisions?

Los Plot Twists finales

Both Stefan and Magnus struck me as profoundly cowardly and useless during that scene. With Stefan, it was just another nail in the coffin; I didn't expect anything different from him. But with Magnus, it was different. Because what I admire most about his character is the way he devours the world, his confidence, his imposing presence. And in that moment... he let the world devour him. And I completely agree with Emily when she tells them that neither of them knows the true meaning of love. They both have a distorted, damaged view of love, marked by ego, possessiveness, and pride. The difference is that Magnus at least seems to learn something from the blow; Stefan, on the other hand, remains intact in his obsession. And the worst part? All this disaster falls on Emily. They pass her around as if she were a pawn in their war of egos, as if she were interchangeable, as if her pain didn't matter. She's not a trophy. She's not a toy. She's the only one who, in the end, understands that love cannot exist without respect.

There is something that stuck with me from the first book, in a conversation between Rose and Emily—probably Rose's most lucid moment—when she tells her not to settle for someone who only makes her feel “good.” That pretty words and lukewarm comfort are not enough. That she shouldn't choose based on “it could be worse” or “this is okay.” And she's right. But it's also not about living only from fire and ecstasy without a real bond to sustain you when everything burns. Love shouldn't be only calm or only storm; it should be a balance between security and spark, between refuge and vertigo. And Magnus, with all his flaws, was exactly that: risk and home at the same time.

Finally, I must give special mention to Gregorie Fulhenor, king of Cromanoff (and also of my heart) and Magnus' cousin, because every time he appears, he elevates the scene. And also to Atelmoff and Francis, the royal advisors, who bring intelligence and political weight to every dialogue. The ending was powerful. Emily understood the value of her freedom. She saw an opportunity and took it. And I don't blame her. She was brave. That's why I urgently need the third book, because, as she herself says, she was able to break the chains of one king, but she was trapped in the heart of another. And I want to believe that this time that heart will be a better destination. Sometimes a seemingly calm sea hides more danger than a wild one. Sometimes it's better to fight the tide than resign yourself to a suffocating calm. And breaking the chains doesn't mean stopping feeling, it means choosing not to be a prisoner again.

Para finalizar, deb hacer mención especial para Gregorie Fulhenor, rey de Cromanoff (y también de mi corazón) y primo de Magnus, porque cada vez que aparece eleva la escena. Y también para Atelmoff y Francis, los consejeros reales, que aportan inteligencia y peso político a cada diálogo. El final fue poderoso. Emily entendió el valor de su libertad. Vio una oportunidad y la tomó. Y no la culpo. Fue valiente. Por eso necesito el tercer libro con urgencia, porque, como ella misma dice, pudo romper las cadenas de un rey, pero quedó atrapada en el corazón de otro. Y yo quiero creer que esta vez ese corazón será un destino mejor. A veces un mar aparentemente tranquilo esconde más peligro que uno salvaje. A veces es mejor luchar contra la marea que resignarse a una calma que aprieta. Y romper las cadenas no significa dejar de sentir, significa elegir no volver a ser prisionera.
