It is no secret that all mini-sculptures in Uzhhorod have historical value. In terms of relating to certain topics or events that took place, both in Uzhhorod itself and simply in Transcarpathia. Today I will tell you about the sculpture, which relates to events that took place more than 100 years ago near a Transcarpathian village. Meet the Meteorite Knyahinya.
History of Meteorite Knyahinya
The largest meteorite in Europe was lucky to fall on the territory of Ukraine. However, then it was Austria-Hungary, it was 1866. One evening in June, a layer of fire flashed in the sky above the mountains. Explosion! And thousands of small stones scattered around. Two weeks later, Vasyl Kryvyanyk, an ordinary peasant, was going to mow the hay. Instead, in the Chorna Mlaka glade, he dug up a stone weighing almost 280 kg from a deep funnel sprinkled with loose soil. It was the nucleus of a meteorite.
For this, Kryvianyk received several strong oxen for the precious find, and the broken fragment was taken to the Vienna Museum of Natural History, where it is still preserved. The meteorite was named "Knyahinya", after the village near which it fell.
By the way, Jules Verne once visited here, and Charles Darwin, after studying the fragments of the meteorite, came to the conclusion: "Knyahinya" contains particles of extraterrestrial corals, parasites and plants! In 1881, the journal Science even published "Darwin and Dr Gan's Discovery of Fossil Organisms in Meteorites."
And although the hypotheses put forward by Darwin and Dr Gan, who did the first experiments, were later refuted in a detailed analysis of the meteorite rock, the meteorite "Knyahinya" clearly occupies a significant place in the history of our country and the planet as a whole.
